Jeanie Johnston - Guided Tours

Tour Overview

A guided tour of the Jeanie Johnston gives visitors a chance to experience the life of Irish emigrants who decided to leave Ireland during the famine and take the difficult transatlantic voyage to an uncertain future in the 'New World'. Below deck, we will see where up to 250 passengers were thrown together to endure the challenging journey together. We have the chance to see the skill, intelligence and craft work that was involved in recreating this genuine replica of the 19th century famine ship back on the main deck of the ship.

Tour Itinerary

Daily tours of the Jeanie Johnston begin at the Custom House Quay which is located down the river from the International Financial Services Centre and across from the Jury's Inn Hotel.

Once on board, visitors are taken back in time 150 years or more to learn the story of the poverty stricken Irish emigrants who took the challenging transatlantic voyage in hope of a better future in the 'New World'.

As we descend into the dark below deck quarters, the harsh realities that faced the passengers becomes very clear. Below deck, we see where up to 250 scared passengers were thrown together to endure the uncertain voyage together.

The accommodations consisted of bare bunks where four adults would be crammed together and share a six foot square space.

In the museum, the life-size figures that are displayed are all based on actual passengers who sailed on the ship. From the 15 year old girl (Margaret Conway) who was traveling with her 12 year old brother, to the father of 11 whose livelihood was ruined by the famine, you will see the hardships these passengers were faced with in Ireland as well as during the challenging transatlantic journey.

On top of the deck, visitors can see the skill, time and craft work that was involved in re-creating the genuine famine ship replica.
